Emissions not cataloged by Alföldi (1)

Isis Festivals Tokens - Rome, fourth century A.D.

EMISSIONS  NOT  CATALOGUED  BY  ALFÖLDI

In 1936, during the Numismatic Congress in London, András Alföldi presented his doctoral thesis: "A Festival of Isis in Rome under the Christian Emperors of the IVth Century", which was published immediately, in 1937. A work of obligatory reference, his "Preliminary Catalogue" (as he himself called it) has not yet been surpassed, no one has tried to complement it with the new files that have appeared in these almost 80 years.

We have tried to update these interesting mintages with this Visual Catalog ("online" since 2014) incorporating new pieces, some of them unpublished, and ordering the tokens that Alföldi showed were practically repeated.

Alföldi produced his catalog in two parts: A) "Coins with Imperial bust" and B) "The Anonymous coinage", identifying 400 issues. In section A) he included 18 emperors between Diocletian and Valentinian II and in B) he differentiated 21 groups of anonymous busts.

We have identified fewer issues, exactly 324, distributed in 40 types of reverses. We also include 18 imperial issuers in them, although we have removed Galerius Maximian and added Decentius.

More than 80 years later, we have only found 16 new imperial issues and 22 anonymous ones, tokens that due to their rarity and importance we are going to show below. Among them, there are truly unpublished pieces, please be scrupulous with our copyright policy and cite this website (www.tesorillo.com) when appropriate. Thank you.
